It’s hard to believe that it has been over 30 years since HIV and AIDS were introduced to our society. Ever the persistently unwelcome party guest, HIV continues to baffle scientists and public health workers who work tirelessly to slow down the relentless virus. December 1 is World AIDS Day, in memory of those lost and a reminder to the world that HIV still poses a very real threat to humans everywhere– no matter what their race, creed, gender, sexuality, or income level.
As part of World AIDS Day, The AIDS Support Network makes a human ribbon at Cal Poly, SLO High, and the mission downtown.
QUICK FACTS: HIV/AIDS in AMERICA
Since 1981 over 575,000 Americans have lost their lives to AIDS
More than 56,000 Americans are infected every year
For the last 10 years, roughly 40,000 people have been infected annually
There are over 1.1 million Americans living with HIV
Only about 79% of individuals living with HIV know their status, thats 869,000 individuals!
What can you do to help reduce the transmission of HIV? Simple–know your status! Get tested at least once a year at your local HIV test clinic. Often, many of these tests are simple, free, and accurate up to 99%. The AIDS Support Network in SLO offers free rapid oral testing (which means no blood) with results delivered in 20 mins! Hows that for quick and painless? Testing days are Wed 1-4 pm and Fri 11-3 pm, walk-ins welcome.
BUT most importantly of all…
BE SAFE!
Remember condoms and lube are always on hand at the AIDS Support Network, and of course, free! Take care of yourself, because if you don’t, who will?
